My favorite quote about martial arts is from the karate kid movie “You learn how to fight so that you won’t have to.”

“ush” or Oosh as I’ve seen it spelled is a sign of respect. It doesn’t have a real direct translation to English, but it’s sort of like “yes sir/ma’am” saying yes whether you want to do it or not – no complaining, just do it without thinking. Then it’s also used when we bow in at the start of karate class.

your pacifism/martial-arts-practicing is totally justified. in my opinion, pacifism is not necessarily the same thing as non-violence (ahimsa)…think, even Switzerland has a military

i am glad to hear that when someone attacks us as we are wandering around boston hopefully lost, you can fight them off while i steal the magic phone GPS and run back to campus
